SINGLE REVIEW FOR PAUL LANDRY “Falling Back To Earth” Written by Kerry Barnes
This man Mr. Paul Landry, Is a Musical Genius!! This epic opus of 09.38 is of Floydian magnitude, truly!! I’ve lost count of the number of instruments Paul is gracing us with, here’s just some of them: Accoustic guitar, electric guitar, classical guitar, keyboard, mellotron, omnisphere (haven’t a clue what that is!!). But at the core of this long-form work is the song “Falling Back To Earth” and Paul’s divine vocals accompanied by a ‘trip down memory lane” where you will ‘find the answers to your happiness and pain’. I’m always on the lookout for moments of heavenly construction, and bingo, found one where Paul sings ‘well, what do you know’, the quality of timbre vocally through this ascending phrase is second to none!!!!!!......I could listen to that bit all day!.....and he follows on beautifully with ‘falling back to earth is a long, long way to go’. The instrumentation is brilliant, starting with some tender and painful piano to bleed your heart, followed by entries of gorgeous strings and somewhat muted drums, I love it. We are treated with a plethora of amazing sounds, not to mention flamenco trills on classical guitar, mmmn-spicy. At 06.14 Paul is harmonising alongside paired back accompaniment and at 06.46 sees the onset of some Mega-Gritty electric guitar. Paul’s guitar skills are out of this world!!! ……a real modern day virtuoso!! My English teacher once told me “when reading Shakespeare, go to every-other line, then you’ll get it”, and that is exactly what is happening in Paul’s libretto. ……I’m drawn to ‘take it in your stride, with eyes so open wide’, there you go, it worked!
There are many profound messages found in this music, Paul guides us to think of ‘escaping from inside a cage, memories of way back when, finding a good place, things that seem the same, when brains connect to pain, ….and a highlight for me is when Paul suddenly changes tack with the back drop, playing dry acoustic guitar only and singing the words “daylight comes, and it seems that I am back again”, like yesterday was just a dream??? …..maybe??. After acknowledging that life is a pretty bumpy ride for us all, and the possibility of world war 3 round the corner, a gentle fade comes in to view, blacking out completely by 09.26. I have a sense that Paul could have gone on and on, and on, such is the stamina of the man, a man who I’m very proud to call my friend. E N D.
